Reverend John Baptist Ku, O.P., an Assistant Professor of the Pontifical Faculty at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., was ordained to the sacred priesthood in the Dominican Order in 1999. After ordination, he served for three years at St. Pius V Parish in Providence, R.I., after which he pursued higher studies in dogmatic theology at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, earning his S.T.D./Ph.D. degrees. He has recently authored “God the Father in the Theology of St. Thomas Aquinas” which gives an exposition of Aquinas’ theology of God the Father as a coherent whole. We look forward to Fr. Ku’s insights on the Eucharist as the preacher of our Corpus Christi Novena.

This was a great celebration as Sister Maria of Jesus was joined by family and friends as well as by many of the friends of the monastery who know and love her from her special times in the Extern area. To make the day even more special, we were joined at Mass by the Igbo Choir of St. Cecelia’s Parish. Stay tuned for a pictorial presentation of the day as well as for an extended story. |

Sr. Theresa Marie Receives the Habit & a New Name

Having briefly experienced religious life as a Houston Dominican teaching sister, Sister Theresa Marie only reluctantly withdrew before final vows when she began to experience a longing for a life more totally dedicated to prayer and adoration. When she came here, her previous experience of religious life enabled her to fit like a hand into a glove, and after a couple of weeks, it was hard to realize that she hadn’t been here for much longer. Sister Marie Thérèse (her title “of the Trinity” will only be used on formal occasions) was asked to say a few words about what the experience of receiving the habit has meant to her. She replied as follows :
“I rejoice heartily in the Lord In my God is the joy of my soul For he has clothed me with a robe of salvation and wrapped me in a mantle of justice.” ( Is 61:10)
This quotation from Isaiah expresses what I really felt on my clothing day, and what the habit meant to me. When the prioress and the novice mistress put the habit on me, I felt I was clothed with the robe of salvation, like our robe of baptism. It is white because it has been “washed in the blood of the Lamb.” (Rev. 7:14) Then a black cope was wrapped around me. This is the mantle of justice that my God, Jesus put on me, and I heard him saying to Satan the accuser: “I’ll pay for her.” He came to pay my debt; indeed, it is the mantle of love and mercy to me. What a tremendous experience of grace I received on the feast of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. What an honor to be a sign and reminder that God’s promise for redemption has been fulfilled. As a cloistered Dominican novice how do I begin my preaching? Ah, I know...just wearing the habit, I profess my faith in Christ Jesus, my Savior. By that simple act I preach to myself first, the ultimate truth that “Jesus Christ is the source of eternal salvation,” (Heb 5:9) for it is in Christ Jesus and through his blood that we have been redeemed and our sins forgiven, so immeasurably generous is God’s favor to us.” (Eph 1:7) How I love to spend my whole life in the monastery to adore and worship my God, my Savior in the Blessed Sacrament day and night, and with Our Blessed Mother forever I sing:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, My spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.” (Lk 1:46)
