Our new Prioress, Sister Mary Rani Valiyaveettil
On February 1, 2013, we had the joy of welcoming Sister Mary Rani, O.P. from the new Dominican convent of Santa Maria in Kerala, South India, which was founded in 2001 by nuns from the Monastery of the Incarnation in Cangas, del Narcea in Northern Spain. It was to this new foundation that, on their request, and that of Reverend Manuel Merten, O.P., then Promoter for Nuns of the Order, our Sister Mary of the Savior was sent “on loan” for three years in 2006. Originally the Spanish nuns felt that they needed a nun who spoke both Spanish and English to help them with their interactions with the local people as well as with the young aspirants.
As we were bidding Sister Mary of the Savior farewell, one of the sisters smilingly told her: “Well, we’re loaning you to India, but you’ve got to bring home a postulant from India!” Sister Mary of the Savior, of course, went with no intention of seeking vocations, but only of being helpful to the new community. But in the Lord’s providence, Sister Mary Rani, who was the first sister in the new community to make solemn vows, learned in the course of her interactions with Sister Mary of the Savior about our charism of Perpetual Adoration which struck a responsive note in her soul. Sister Mary Rani, who at this time was in a position of leadership in the new community, after prayer and reflection petitioned her superiors to allow her to transfer on a trial basis to our monastery.
We doubt that when she came over a dozen years ago, that she imagined she would one day be the prioress of her new community!
We are deeply indebted to the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist and OpenLight Media for producing this documentary of our life as contemplative Dominican women.
